The Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL) has named Adam Mutawakilu as its Acting Managing Director, following an appointment by President John Dramani Mahama. Mutawakilu’s appointment, which is in line with Article 195(1) of the 1992 Constitution, is subject to approval by the GWCL Board in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
In his first address to staff, Mutawakilu expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and committed to working closely with stakeholders to improve the company’s operations. He underscored the vital role GWCL plays in providing reliable water services, particularly to underserved communities across the country.
While acknowledging his lack of direct experience in water management, Mutawakilu highlighted his background in energy, finance, and governance, expressing his willingness to learn from the company’s professionals.
Mutawakilu holds multiple advanced degrees, including an MSc in Development Finance from the University of Ghana, an MSc in Energy Economics from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), and an MPhil in Petroleum and Oil Studies from the University of Cape Coast. He also completed a Commonwealth Executive Master’s in Business Administration from KNUST and an Executive Certificate in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana School of Governance and Leadership.
His previous roles include serving as the first Member of Parliament for Damongo Constituency from 2013 to 2020, Ranking Member of the Mines and Energy Committee in Parliament, District Chief Executive for the West Gonja District, and Head of Treasury at the University for Development Studies (UDS).
Mutawakilu’s diverse experience in governance and finance positions him to lead GWCL as it seeks to address challenges in water supply and infrastructure development.
