Nigeria’s Ademola Lookman has been named the 2024 CAF Men’s Player of the Year, solidifying his place among Africa’s top football talents.

The 27-year-old forward, who plays for Atalanta in Italy, earned the prestigious award for his remarkable performances with both his club and the Nigerian national team. Lookman’s consistency throughout the year made him the standout choice for the honour, which was presented at the CAF Awards ceremony in Marrakech.

Lookman impressed at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in February, scoring three goals and providing two assists to help Nigeria reach the final. Although the Super Eagles were defeated by Côte d’Ivoire in a tight match, Lookman’s contribution was undeniable.

At club level, Lookman continued to shine, playing a key role in Atalanta’s UEFA Europa League triumph. He scored a stunning hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen, further showcasing his clinical form. In total, he netted 11 goals and provided five assists in just 18 appearances across all competitions, including a memorable goal against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.

Lookman triumphed over other nominees including Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi, Côte d’Ivoire’s Simon Adingra, Guinea’s Serhou Guirassy, and South Africa’s Ronwen Williams. However, none could match Lookman’s remarkable impact this year.

His victory adds to Nigeria’s illustrious history at the CAF Awards, following in the footsteps of 2023 winner Victor Osimhen, and legendary names such as Nwankwo Kanu, Rashidi Yekini, Emmanuel Amuneke, and Victor Ikpeba.
