Dr. Dickson Adomako Kissi, the Member of Parliament for Anyaa-Sowutuom, has revealed that candidates from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) spent an average of GH¢10 million each on their parliamentary campaigns.

Speaking during an interview on Channel One TV’s The Big Issue on Saturday, 14 December, Dr. Adomako Kissi discussed the substantial financial investments required to contest parliamentary seats in Ghana’s highly competitive political environment.

He noted the heavy financial burden on candidates, stressing the challenges they face when their efforts do not result in electoral success. “On average, every NPP Member of Parliament who went into this battle may have spent close to GH¢10 million. From primaries to date,” he said, adding that many candidates made these investments with the hope of victory, only to face defeat.

Dr. Adomako Kissi also raised concerns about the unrealistic expectations placed on candidates by the electorate, pointing to the financial strain caused by high campaign costs. He suggested that this issue is one of the significant challenges facing Ghana’s democracy.

“The promises were many,” he continued, “and people were demanding more than what was feasible.” He also referenced a discussion with fellow MP Henry Quartey, who expressed concerns over the pressures ministers face to meet public expectations.
