Former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, and his wife, Angela Adjei Boateng, have filed a lawsuit against the Attorney General (AG) and the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over a controversial GH¢200 million bail imposed on the couple.
The pair remain in custody as they challenge what their defense team calls “unjustifiably harsh” bail conditions set by prosecutors. Their lawyer, Samuel Atta Akyea, argues that the GH¢120 million bail for Adu-Boahene and GH¢80 million for his wife are not only excessive but seem designed to bypass constitutional limits on detention.
The couple’s legal team claims their clients’ rights are being violated under these terms. Last week, Adu-Boahene was arrested at Kotoka International Airport (KIA) upon his return from London on a British Airways flight. His wife was also detained after visiting EOCO to check on her husband.
Adu-Boahene is accused of embezzling state funds in connection with a $7 million cyber defense contract. During a press conference on March 24, Attorney General Dr. Dominic Ayine confirmed the arrests, revealing that the investigation centers on the alleged misappropriation of funds meant for a cyber defense system intended to combat digital threats and data breaches. Instead, it is believed that the funds were diverted for personal gain.
The couple’s lawsuit puts the spotlight on the controversial bail decision, raising concerns about its fairness and the broader implications for the couple’s rights.
