Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has expressed his dissatisfaction with Speaker Alban Bagbin’s rejection of a request for an emergency recall of Parliament.

In a letter dated November 22, 2024, Afenyo-Markin and his caucus proposed November 28 and 29 as possible dates to reconvene the House to discuss urgent issues. However, Speaker Bagbin has insisted that parliamentary activities will remain suspended until after the December 7 general elections.

In response to Bagbin’s decision, Afenyo-Markin criticized the Speaker for treating Parliament as his personal domain. “The Speaker has taken Parliament as his personal property, opening and closing it at his discretion,” he stated.

He noted the recent impasse and emphasized that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) lawmakers sought a legal resolution, which ruled in their favor. “I expected Mr. Speaker, as a Democrat, to immediately reconvene Parliament to ensure government business continues, but he chose not to,” Afenyo-Markin told Joy News.
