Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Member of Parliament for Effutu, has predicted that a significant number of National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs will be sidelined following the party’s promise to form a lean government with a smaller cabinet.
Speaking on JoyNews, Afenyo-Markin suggested that the NDC’s overwhelming parliamentary majority could lead to many MPs becoming “redundant” once the party implements its commitment to having no more than 60 ministers, including both full and deputy ministers.
With the NDC holding over 170 seats in Parliament, Afenyo-Markin speculated that 35 to 40 MPs could be appointed to ministerial positions. This would leave approximately 140 MPs without key roles or responsibilities, diminishing their influence in the legislative process.
He also noted the potential challenges MPs could face, as they would still be expected to manage their constituencies without the necessary resources, drawing parallels to difficulties faced by the previous administration.
“These MPs will face demands from their constituencies but will have limited resources, leading to tensions and frustrations,” Afenyo-Markin said. He further recalled how, under the previous government, it became difficult to fill the Parliamentary chamber, with MPs often absent despite the majority in Parliament.
