Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the outgoing Majority Leader of Ghana’s Parliament, has urged the incoming National Democratic Congress (NDC) government to either retain Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Parliament or appoint a new Speaker from within the current parliamentary ranks.
Afenyo-Markin emphasized that if the NDC decides to replace Bagbin, the new Speaker should be a sitting member of Parliament rather than an outsider. He commended Bagbin for his leadership over the past four years, highlighting his efforts to empower the institution and his focus on the welfare of members.
In his remarks during Parliament’s first sitting after a long break, Afenyo-Markin stated, “If they decide to maintain you, Parliament will continue to benefit. But should they decide to retire you, the new Speaker should come from within. We don’t want an outsider.”
He further acknowledged Bagbin’s leadership, saying, “We may have had our disagreements, but it is clear that the welfare of members has been key to your leadership. Nobody can take that away from you.”
The sitting, held at the Accra International Conference Centre, marked the start of Parliament’s resumption, where members are set to discuss key matters before the current term concludes.
