Afenyo-Markin: We’ll ensure Akwatia MP’s compliance with the law

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has pledged to take appropriate measures to ensure that Akwatia MP Ernest Yaw Kumi complies with a recent court ruling, following his conviction for contempt.

The Koforidua High Court found Kumi in contempt after he violated an interim injunction that had barred him from being sworn in as a Member of Parliament. Despite the court’s directive, Kumi went ahead with his swearing-in, prompting the judge to issue a bench warrant for his arrest after he failed to appear for sentencing.

The court had previously issued a restraining order preventing Kumi from taking the oath of office until a legal dispute was resolved. Kumi’s actions, according to the court, amounted to willful defiance of the legal order.

An attempt by the Minority Caucus to justify Kumi’s absence from the sentencing hearing was dismissed by the presiding judge, Justice Senyo Amedahe, who affirmed that Kumi had disregarded the court’s authority. With the bench warrant now in effect, law enforcement is expected to enforce Kumi’s arrest.

In a statement to the media on February 19, Mr. Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the court’s decision but expressed dissatisfaction with the manner in which the case had been handled. “We are yet to receive the court ruling and full orders, but we will ensure that all necessary steps are taken to ensure our colleague’s compliance with the law,” he said.

He also voiced concerns over the fairness of the ruling, calling it unsatisfactory to the Minority Caucus. “We will release our position once we receive a full briefing from our lawyers,” Mr. Afenyo-Markin added.
