Samuel George, Minister-nominee for Communications, has strongly condemned what he called the “despicable behavior” of Alexander Afenyo-Markin, Ranking Member of the Appointment Committee, towards Clerk Gifty Jiagge Gobah.
The incident occurred during the vetting process, when Minority MPs on the committee accused Gobah of excluding them from key aspects of the vetting, particularly during Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa’s session. The Minority claimed that, under the previous administration, the same clerk had ensured they received draft reports before signing.
Taking to social media on Sunday, February 2, Sam George expressed his outrage over Afenyo-Markin’s actions, which he described as “shameful” and “misogynistic.”
“I am appalled at the despicable behaviour of @AfenyoMarkin towards Madam Gifty Jiagge Gobah,” George wrote. He further emphasized that such conduct was unworthy of a leader in Parliament, adding that Afenyo-Markin would not have treated a male clerk in the same way.
“This shameful behaviour is unbecoming of a Leader of the august House. I am absolutely certain he would not have dared to do this to a male Clerk of Parliament,” Sam George continued.
The MP for Ningo-Prampram called for respect for Gobah and urged both Parliament and society at large to condemn the actions. He also called on the Clerk of Parliament, Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, to formally raise the issue with the Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin.
George emphasized that the passage of the Affirmative Action Law made it imperative for Parliament to not allow such “uncouth behavior” to go unchallenged. He ended his post with words of encouragement for Madam Gobah, praising her poise and composure in the face of the insults.
“Madam Gifty Jiagge Gobah, I and many more decent people stand with you,” Sam George concluded. “Be encouraged and stand strong with your head held high. Your poise and composure even when you were under the barrage of insults is remarkable. Such a role model for our daughters.”
