Gregory Afoko, a key suspect in the 2015 murder of Adams Mahama, former Upper East Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has been granted bail by the Accra High Court after spending almost a decade in detention. The court set Afoko’s bail at GH₵500,000 with two sureties.
Afoko, who was arrested in 2015, filed a fresh application for bail on February 17, marking his third attempt after a protracted legal battle. The court’s decision follows nine years of delays in his trial.
Afoko faces accusations of conspiring to murder Mahama in a brutal acid attack outside his Bolgatanga home. The trial, which started in 2019 and ended in 2023, saw the jury return a hung verdict on both murder and conspiracy charges, prompting the court to order a retrial.
Following the inconclusive verdict, Mr.Afoko was re-arrested and denied bail, but his lawyers successfully argued for his release on bail at a hearing on Friday, pending trial.
While the bail grant marks a notable shift in the case, the trial is still ongoing as the state continues with its prosecution.
