An Accra circuit court has convicted Patricia Asiedua Asiamah, a controversial religious figure widely known as Nana Agradaa, on charges of deceptive advertising and defrauding by false pretence in connection with a high-profile “money doubling” scheme.
The charges relate to a televised broadcast aired in 2022, during which Ms. Asiamah—formerly a traditional priestess turned self-styled Christian evangelist—claimed she possessed spiritual powers to double cash for members of the public. The advertisement prompted numerous individuals to hand over substantial sums of money in the belief they would receive double in return. Authorities later determined the claims were baseless.
Following the verdict, the court ordered a routine pregnancy test before sentencing, in accordance with Ghana’s judicial guidelines for female convicts. The outcome of that test is expected to influence the final sentencing decision, which has yet to be delivered.
