President Nana Akufo-Addo has appointed members to constitute the government side of Ghana’s Transition Team, as mandated by the Presidential (Transition) Act, 2012 (Act 845).
In a statement issued on Tuesday, December 10, the government outlined the appointees, who will play a key role in ensuring the smooth transfer of executive authority. The appointed individuals are:
Chief of Staff: Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare
Attorney-General: Godfred Yeboah Dame
Minister for Presidential Affairs: Hon. Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu
Minister for Finance: Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam
Minister for the Interior: Hon. Henry Quartey
Minister for Defence: Hon. Dominic Nitiwul
Minister for Foreign Affairs: Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey
Minister for Local Government: Hon. Martin Adjei-Mensah Korsah
Minister for National Security: Hon. Albert Kan Dapaah
In line with Section 1 (2) of the Act, additional members include:
Head of Civil Service: Dr. Evans Aggrey-Darkoh
Head of Local Government Service: Dr. Nana Ato Arthur
Secretary to the Cabinet: Ambassador Mercy Debrah-Karikari
National Security Coordinator: Mr. Edward Asomani
The Transition Team will be officially inaugurated on Wednesday, December 11, 2024, following a meeting between President Akufo-Addo and President-elect John Dramani Mahama, who will serve as Co-Chairpersons of the team. In the absence of the president, Hon. Akosua Frema Osei-Opare will act as Co-Chairperson.
Further, President Akufo-Addo has appointed former Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, to the Advisory Council, with current Speaker Rt. Alban Bagbin serving as the Council’s Chairperson.
The team is tasked with facilitating the transfer of executive power and ensuring the stability and continuity of governance in Ghana. The statement also reiterated Akufo-Addo’s commitment to a smooth transition, strengthening the country’s democratic processes.
President-elect Mahama has also named his own team, with the transition process set to begin in earnest in the coming days.
