President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to modernising the Ghana Armed Forces to address both current and future security challenges.

In a speech on 23rd December 2024, the president underscored the importance of the military’s evolving capabilities, highlighting recent developments such as the establishment of the Navy Training Command and the Riverine Command. These steps, he said, are vital in ensuring the Armed Forces are equipped to safeguard Ghana’s sovereignty and security.

The president was speaking at the commissioning of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ezinlibo, located in the Western Region, which will bolster the Navy’s ability to combat piracy, illegal fishing, and other threats in the Gulf of Guinea. The new base is part of a broader effort to strengthen security infrastructure across the country, joining others in Tilli, Bui, Sankore, and Kenyase. Additional bases are planned for Keta, Ada, Winneba, and Elmina.

Akufo-Addo also visited the Sekondi Naval Base, where he commissioned the Ghana Navy Ship (GNS) Achimota—the largest vessel ever built in Ghana. At 65 metres in length, the GNS Achimota represents a milestone in the Navy’s growth and modernisation, symbolising the country’s aspirations to become a maritime power in the region.

Reflecting on his tenure, the president praised the Ghana Navy for its dedication and resilience, emphasising that these developments are not only about infrastructure but also about creating a legacy of peace and strength for future generations.

“As my time as Commander-in-Chief draws to a close, these milestones remind me of the progress we have made together. Let us continue to build a safer, stronger Ghana,” Akufo-Addo concluded.
