The statue of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in Sekondi-Takoradi has been vandalized, sparking speculation among residents. The statue, located near the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital, was unveiled by the President himself and has been a topic of public debate since its installation.
Residents discovered the damage on Monday, December 16, with reports indicating that the statue appeared intact just days earlier, on the evening of December 13. The circumstances surrounding the vandalism remain unclear, as the statue is situated in a relatively isolated area without nearby residential buildings, leading to questions about how the act went unnoticed.
Criticism of the statue has been prevalent since its unveiling, with many questioning its relevance amid unfulfilled government promises and stalled projects in the region. Richard Kirk Mensah, the Western Regional Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been particularly vocal, suggesting that the statue would be more appropriately placed in the President’s hometown of Kyebi.
While some locals initially viewed the statue positively, sentiments have shifted. Nana Adwoa Banko, a roasted plantain vendor near the Effia Nkwanta roundabout, expressed disappointment over the vandalism, stating, “I don’t think it’s right. They should have at least waited until after the handing over.”
