Outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to prioritize the completion of the Agenda 111 hospital projects as he prepares to take office.
Launched during Akufo-Addo’s administration at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, Agenda 111 aims to build 111 district and regional hospitals, including psychiatric facilities, to address significant gaps in Ghana’s healthcare system.
While progress has been made, many of the projects remain unfinished as Akufo-Addo’s term concludes.
In his final State of the Nation Address (SONA) on January 3, 2025, President Akufo-Addo highlighted the importance of the initiative, describing it as a key part of Ghana’s healthcare development. He referred to it as a “legacy project” that would help improve access to healthcare and ease pressure on existing facilities.
“The pandemic revealed critical weaknesses in our healthcare system, and we took measures to ensure better preparedness in the future. The Agenda 111 project is the most significant of these efforts, aiming to place a hospital in every district, adding 111 district hospitals and two psychiatric hospitals,” Akufo-Addo said.
He confirmed that work is ongoing at 99 of the planned sites, with construction progress ranging from 5% to 95%. The President also noted that three of the district hospitals were commissioned in December 2023.
Akufo-Addo expressed hope that Mahama’s administration would complete the remaining works, further strengthening the nation’s healthcare infrastructure.
