Ernest Yaw Kumi, a first-term Member of Parliament representing Akwatia under Ghana’s ruling New Patriotic Party, died Monday, according to individuals familiar with the matter. He was 42.
The cause of death has not been officially disclosed. Neither Parliament nor the NPP leadership has issued a public statement as of Monday evening. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced in the coming days.
Mr. Kumi secured the Akwatia seat in the December 2024 general elections, emerging victorious in one of the most closely watched and hotly contested races of the cycle. His win marked a significant gain for the NPP in a constituency long considered a political battleground.
Before entering Parliament, Mr. Kumi built his reputation in regional politics and was seen by many within the party as a rising figure. His sudden death is expected to prompt a by-election and could reshape the political dynamics in the Eastern Region.
The Akwatia constituency, located in Ghana’s Eastern Region, holds strategic importance for both major parties and has often served as a bellwether in national contests.
Mr. Kumi is survived by his wife and two children.
