Ghanaian music group Alabaster Box has threatened legal action against rapper Medikal over claims of copyright infringement concerning his song “Welcome to Africa.”
Through their legal representatives, Sustineri Attorneys, Alabaster Box alleges that Medikal unlawfully sampled their popular track “Akwaaba” without permission. According to a formal notice sent to the rapper, the group argues that the opening seconds of “Welcome to Africa” closely resemble their copyrighted song, constituting a derivative work that violates their rights.
The group further asserts that Medikal’s apparent familiarity with “Akwaaba” suggests intentional infringement. “Welcome to Africa” has been widely promoted across various platforms, including Medikal’s verified YouTube channel, where it has attracted more than 72,000 views. Alabaster Box contends that this promotion unfairly benefits from their intellectual property.
The group has demanded that the song be removed from all platforms, cease public performance and marketing, and that all relevant agreements and financial records be submitted. Should Medikal fail to comply, Alabaster Box has warned of potential legal action, including a court injunction and claims for damages.
Alabaster Box has emphasized its commitment to protecting its creative rights and maintaining its longstanding reputation in the music industry.
