Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has pledged to use his extensive experience to steer Ghana’s 9th Parliament, following his re-election as Speaker.

In his acceptance speech, Bagbin, the longest-serving legislator in Ghana’s history, underscored the importance of unity, collaboration, and Parliament’s role as a “bulwark of democracy.” He reflected on his journey, noting his experience as both a lawmaker and Speaker, which has shaped his leadership approach.

“I came to the Speaker’s office in the 8th Parliament with my experience as the longest-serving legislator,” Bagbin said. “Now, I come to the 9th Parliament not only with that background but with the added experience of four years in the role during a difficult hung parliament.”

His tenure in the 8th Parliament, characterised by its complex dynamics, has honed his skills in navigating political challenges. He assured MPs that the lessons learned will guide him in making the 9th Parliament more efficient and effective.

Bagbin’s leadership will be critical in maintaining balance and order in a politically divided Parliament. He called for trust and cooperation from MPs, emphasising the importance of collaboration over political divisions.

“I am very grateful for the privilege and confidence you have placed in me to serve as Speaker and guide this honourable House once more,” he said, pledging to prioritise the needs of the Ghanaian people.

He further emphasised Parliament’s role in safeguarding the country’s democracy, promising to lead with diligence, efficiency, and a sense of responsibility. “I promise to bring all my experiences to bear in guiding this House to perform its mandate,” he said.

In a message to the Ghanaian public, Bagbin urged citizens to actively engage with the work of Parliament, promising a commitment to transparency and inclusivity.

The Speaker also stressed that his leadership style would be focused on maturity and diplomacy, noting that “today’s timing is not conducive for confrontation.”

Bagbin’s first duties include swearing in the newly elected Members of Parliament and overseeing the election of Deputy Speakers—actions that will set the tone for his leadership in the 9th Parliament.

In closing, he expressed gratitude for the trust placed in him, saying, “Once again, I am very grateful for this great honour.”
