Alban Bagbin re-elected Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament

Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has been re-elected as Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament, with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holding the majority and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the minority.

Mr. Bagbin was nominated for the role by Majority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson. The nomination was seconded by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin. After a brief discussion and no further nominations, the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djietro, declared Mr. Bagbin as Speaker. He was then sworn in by Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

Profile of Alban Bagbin

Born on September 24, 1957, Alban Bagbin is a veteran Ghanaian politician who previously served as Speaker of the 8th Parliament. He has represented the Nadowli West constituency in the Upper West Region for several terms and was Minister for Health from 2012 to 2013.

Bagbin contested the National Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential nomination in 2019 but lost to former President John Dramani Mahama. His leadership has spanned multiple legislative sessions, including his pivotal role as Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

Early Life and Education

Bagbin hails from Sombo, Upper West Region. He attended Wa and Tamale Secondary Schools before earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Law and English from the University of Ghana in 1980. He was called to the bar in 1982 after attending the Ghana School of Law and later obtained an Executive Masters in Governance and Leadership from GIMPA.

Career

Bagbin’s career spans various fields. He began as acting Secretary to the Statistical Service Board before working as Personnel Manager at State Hotels Corporation. He later moved to Libya to teach English, returning to Ghana in 1986 to join Akyem Chambers, a law firm. Bagbin eventually became a partner at Okyeman Chambers, where he served as an external solicitor for prominent organizations in Ghana.
