The Electoral Commission (EC) has confirmed its readiness for the Council of State Elections, set to take place today, Tuesday, February 11, 2025, across Ghana. Voting will occur in the regional capitals, with polls open from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM at regional coordination councils.

A total of 154 candidates, including 144 men and 10 women, are vying for regional representation in the Council of State. The electoral college, comprising 522 voters, will play a crucial role in the elections, with each region having one voting centre.

The electoral college consists of two representatives from each district, nominated by district assemblies. Although voting is officially scheduled to close at 5:00 PM, the EC has instructed regional officers to close the polls earlier if all registered voters have cast their ballots before the scheduled time.

The winners will be announced at the respective voting centres immediately after the polls close.

Despite 155 individuals filing to contest the elections, the number of female candidates remains low, with just 10 women in the race. Notably, no women are standing for election in several regions, including Greater Accra, Volta, and Upper East. The Eastern Region leads with three female candidates, while Western and Ashanti have two each. Central, Ahafo, and Bono regions each have one female contender.

The 30-member Council of State serves as an advisory body to the President, Parliament, and other government bodies, ensuring responsible and accountable governance.
