Preparations are complete for the historic swearing-in of President-elect John Dramani Mahama and his Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, set to take place at the Independence Square in Accra following their decisive victory in the December 2024 elections.

Mahama’s return to the presidency marks a significant moment in Ghana’s political history, as he begins a second term after serving as president from 2012 to 2016. His comeback highlights the resilience of Ghana’s democracy, underpinned by free and fair elections that allow leaders to return to power through the will of the people.

For Opoku-Agyemang, her swearing-in as Ghana’s first female Vice President represents a groundbreaking achievement in both Ghanaian and African politics. A distinguished academic and former Minister of Education, Opoku-Agyemang’s rise to the second-highest office in the land is seen as a major step towards greater gender inclusivity in political leadership.

The inauguration is expected to draw dignitaries from across Africa, with confirmed attendees including the presidents of Gabon, Botswana, Nigeria, Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Namibia, Liberia, Kenya, Sierra Leone, and DR Congo, along with the Vice Presidents of Tanzania, Equatorial Guinea, and Uganda.

This momentous occasion is poised to be a defining chapter in Ghana’s evolving democracy, symbolising hope, resilience, and the potential for change.
