A group of youths, reportedly affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC), have gathered outside the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) headquarters to protest the appointment of Anthony Sarpong as Acting Commissioner-General.
On January 21, President John Dramani Mahama appointed Mr. Sarpong to the key position, which is responsible for overseeing Ghana’s tax collection and revenue mobilisation efforts. Sarpong, an experienced accountant and former Senior Partner at the international auditing firm KPMG, was selected to strengthen the country’s revenue systems during a period of fiscal challenges.
Despite his qualifications, the appointment has been met with resistance from some factions within the NDC. Critics claim that Mr. Sarpong has ties to the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), raising concerns about his loyalty to the government and its revenue agenda.
Protesters are urging President Mahama to reconsider the appointment, arguing that placing someone with perceived opposition connections in such an important role could undermine the party’s interests.
The controversy highlights the ongoing tensions within the NDC as it navigates the balance between ensuring competent leadership and maintaining party loyalty in key positions. The government has yet to comment on the protest or calls for the appointment to be revoked.
