The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) has called on Ghanaians to remain patient and allow the Electoral Commission (EC) to officially declare the results of the December 7 general elections.
In response to rising tensions and calls for greater transparency, particularly from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), CODEO issued a statement urging the public to adhere to constitutional processes. The group expressed confidence in the EC’s management of the polls, noting that its findings from a sample of 1,500 polling stations across the country confirmed the election’s transparency.
The coalition reported that 99% of political party agents and all presiding officers signed the parliamentary results declaration forms, reinforcing confidence in the integrity of the process. CODEO also commended the EC for its organisation of the election, including the setup of polling stations and ballot counting, which it described as credible.
CODEO’s Parallel Vote Tabulation (PVT) system, which has been monitoring results from the sampled stations, will provide an independent verification of the EC’s official results once announced. The coalition stated it would release its own estimates only after the EC’s official declaration.
In its briefing, CODEO also praised the peaceful conduct of the election, thanking all stakeholders, including the EC, security services, political parties, the media, and the public. The coalition further lauded Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party’s presidential candidate, for his early concession, calling it a positive example of statesmanship.
CODEO concluded by urging all citizens to remain calm and uphold Ghana’s democratic values as the EC completes its work.
