Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has dismissed claims of a long-standing rivalry with Black Stars skipper Andre Ayew, suggesting that the tension between them was manufactured by outside influences with personal agendas.
In an Instagram Live session on Thursday, Gyan sought to clarify his relationship with Ayew, stating that the perceived rift was the result of manipulation. “Andre is a good person. He has that genuine love for me, but he has been brainwashed because it benefits people. That is what has brought the so-called rivalry. Me, I am not a rival to anyone,” Gyan said.
The tension between the two players is believed to have intensified after Ayew succeeded Gyan as Black Stars captain in 2019, sparking widespread speculation about animosity between the two.
Gyan, who retired from international football in 2023, has frequently used social media to discuss various controversies from his career, including his infamous penalty miss against Uruguay at the 2010 World Cup.
With 51 goals, Gyan remains Ghana’s all-time top scorer. He expressed a desire to move beyond the issue, emphasizing the importance of unity within the national team.
