Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene and traditional ruler of the Asante Kingdom, has postponed this year’s Odwira Festival, originally slated for October 31, citing the recent death of the Asantehemaa, Queen Mother Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
The announcement came during a meeting of the Asanteman Council on Thursday, where the monarch underscored that the festival could not proceed in the absence of the Queen Mother. In keeping with Asante custom, a successor must be enstooled and traditional rites performed before the Odwira celebrations can take place.
“Tradition demands that a successor is enstooled and the requisite stool rites done at Wirempe,” the Asantehene said, referring to the royal site where such rituals are conducted.
The Odwira Festival, one of the most significant cultural events in the Asante Kingdom, is marked annually by a series of purification ceremonies and ancestral rituals. It serves to cleanse the land, reaffirm communal bonds, and honor the spirits of the departed.
A new date for the festival has yet to be announced.
