Asantehene Urges Mahama Appointees to Prioritize National Interest

Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene and one of Ghana’s most revered traditional leaders, has urged government appointees under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration to place the nation’s interest above personal or partisan considerations.

Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Jubilee House on Monday,June 2,Asantehene called on public officials to demonstrate integrity, loyalty, and a firm commitment to national development. His remarks come as President Mahama begins a fresh term in office following his re-election in 2024 for a non-consecutive second term.

“The progress of this country depends on your dedication and how faithfully you carry out your responsibilities,” the Asantehene said. “Put Ghana first in all that you do.”

He warned against complacency and urged appointees to remain focused on delivering results that benefit the broader population. The Asantehene’s appeal is seen as both a symbolic and substantive reminder to the current administration amid growing public scrutiny over governance, transparency, and economic recovery.

President Mahama, who has pledged to run a leaner, more efficient government, has already initiated policy reforms targeting economic stabilization and infrastructure development. His second-term agenda includes downsizing ministerial appointments and prioritizing fiscal discipline.

The visit is part of an ongoing dialogue between the traditional authority and the presidency, with previous meetings having focused on development needs in the Ashanti Region and broader national issues.

The Asantehene’s comments underscore the growing role of traditional leaders in shaping public expectations of accountability and governance in Ghana’s evolving democracy.
