Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, the Chairman of National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been sworn in as Board Chairman of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), signaling a strategic political appointment in the country’s critical maritime sector.
The ceremony, held Wednesday in Accra, also inducted Professor Ransford Gyampo, acting CEO of the Ghana Shippers Authority, as a member of the reconstituted GPHA board. The appointments are part of a broader government initiative to reinforce oversight and governance across the nation’s transport and trade infrastructure.
The GPHA oversees Ghana’s two major seaports—Tema and Takoradi—which serve as vital gateways for international commerce in West Africa. The new board is expected to drive policy direction, improve port operations, and accelerate long-term infrastructure projects aimed at expanding capacity and improving efficiency.
Analysts say the inclusion of high-profile political and academic figures in the boardroom suggests the government is seeking to blend political capital with technical expertise to position Ghana as a regional logistics hub.
The leadership shift comes at a time when port authorities across Africa are under pressure to modernize and increase revenue mobilization amid rising global trade competition. Stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether the new GPHA board can deliver on promised reforms.
