Ghana’s Finance Minister-designate, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to maintaining and enhancing the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, which was initially introduced by the Akufo-Addo administration.

This follows President John Dramani Mahama’s promise during his 2024 campaign to build on the policy rather than abolish it.

During his vetting before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on January 13, Dr. Forson reiterated the government’s position, emphasising their intention to preserve and strengthen the policy for the benefit of students across the country.

“My party’s stance on Free SHS has been clearly articulated by President Mahama. We have no plans to cancel it. The President has stated that Free SHS is here to stay,” Dr. Forson said.

He added, “You have the assurance from the highest level of government. The President of the Republic has made this statement, and as a minister appointed by him, I stand by it.”
