Two people were killed when a privately operated microlight aircraft crashed Monday afternoon near the central business district of Tema, according to officials from the Ghana National Fire Service.

The aircraft went down near Oninku Drive School Park in Tema Community One while en route from Ho to Accra. Emergency responders arrived within minutes and quickly extinguished a fire that broke out after the crash.

Divisional Officer II Ebenezer Ayenzu, public relations officer for the Ghana National Fire Service in Tema, said the remains of the two individuals on board were retrieved from the wreckage and transported to the Police morgue for preservation and autopsy.

“It is not a military aircraft,” Mr. Ayenzu said, addressing earlier reports suggesting the helicopter was operated by the military. “There were two persons on board, and their bodies have been retrieved and sent to the Police morgue for preservation and autopsy.”

Fire personnel reached the crash site about three minutes after the incident and extinguished the blaze within five minutes, he said, allowing responders to extract the bodies from the damaged aircraft.

The Ghana Civil Aviation Authority said the microlight aircraft, bearing registration number 9G-ADV, lost radio contact at 1418Z on Monday. Authorities said additional details about the cause of the crash will be released as the investigation continues.
