Abdulai Abu Baba Abubakar Sadiq of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has been declared the winner of the Okaikwei Central parliamentary seat, defeating incumbent Patrick Yaw Boamah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in a closely contested race during Ghana’s 2024 general elections.
Initial results suggested Boamah had won, but protests from the NDC led the Electoral Commission (EC) to review the figures. Following this review, Baba Sadiq was officially declared the winner, securing 15,383 votes, compared to Boamah’s 14,949 votes.
The NDC had called for the EC to base the declaration on two-thirds of the polling station results, which accounted for 78% of the votes. The EC had identified discrepancies in around 31 pink sheets, which delayed the final decision. The NPP disagreed with this approach but did not publicly contest the outcome during the discussions.
Collation delays had already disrupted the process, particularly at the Ansurudeen Islamic School polling station, where disagreements over space led to chaos and the destruction of voting booths. Despite these challenges, the final results were confirmed, marking a significant victory for the NDC in Okaikwei Central.
