Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has unveiled plans for a new initiative designed to expose and shame corrupt public officials. The “National Vultures Award” will highlight those who have failed to uphold ethical standards in governance as part of a broader effort to promote integrity and transparency.
Addressing Parliament before it was adjourned indefinitely, Speaker Bagbin stressed the importance of integrity in both public office and society. While the focus will be on recognizing individuals who exemplify strong moral conduct, the Speaker made it clear that accountability for those engaged in corrupt practices is equally essential.
“Through this initiative, we aim to inspire a movement where integrity is not just expected but celebrated,” Mr Bagbin said. “We will honour men and women of integrity with the National Integrity Award. At the same time, there will be the Vulture Award, which will shine a light on individuals with the lowest levels of integrity in the country.”
Mr. Bagbin described the programme as “transformative,” emphasizing that exposing corruption and holding officials accountable is crucial for fostering a culture of transparency and good governance in Ghana. The initiative, which aims to both celebrate ethical conduct and penalize corruption, is set to make waves as a powerful tool for reform in the country’s political landscape.
