Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has instructed the Committee of Selection to reconstitute the Appointments Committee following disruptions during the vetting session on January 30, 2025.

In a series of measures announced on January 31, Bagbin also directed the Clerk of Parliament to file a criminal complaint with the police to facilitate a full investigation into the violent clashes that occurred. The goal is to identify those responsible and ensure accountability.

Additionally, the Clerk has been tasked with assessing the damage to parliamentary property caused during the altercations. Members found responsible will be required to cover the cost of repairs.

A seven-member investigative committee, chaired by Emmanuel Bedzrah, has also been formed to look into the incident. The committee is expected to submit its findings within 10 days, which will inform any further actions to prevent such incidents in the future.

As part of the fallout from the clashes, the Majority and Minority Chief Whips, Frank Annoh-Dompreh and Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, along with Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli and Jerry Ahmed Shaib, have been suspended from parliamentary sittings for two weeks, effective from January 31.

The disruptions, which included violent confrontations between lawmakers, occurred during the Appointments Committee’s vetting process.
