Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, issued a stern warning on Tuesday, January 28, to Members of Parliament (MPs) regarding involvement in illegal mining, or galamsey, stating that severe sanctions will follow if any legislator is found participating in the practice.

Speaking before the plenary, Bagbin underscored the critical need for parliamentarians to take a firm stand against the escalating environmental damage caused by galamsey. He stressed that MPs, as leaders entrusted with the public’s trust, must lead by example and avoid engaging in activities that harm the nation’s ecosystems.

“Galamsey must be confronted head-on,” Bagbin declared, urging MPs to dissociate themselves from any illegal mining operations. “If any of you happen to be involved, please advise yourself,” he added, emphasizing that Parliament would take swift action against any implicated members.

His remarks come amid rising concerns over the environmental devastation caused by galamsey, particularly the destruction of water bodies and forests. Illegal mining has long been a scourge on Ghana’s natural resources, with reports frequently linking politicians and government officials to the practice. Allegations of complicity, either through direct involvement or offering protection to illegal miners, have persisted despite ongoing government efforts to curb the industry.

The galamsey issue has remained a key challenge for successive administrations, with various initiatives such as task forces, military operations, and legislative bans failing to stem the tide of illegal mining. The persistence of the practice has been attributed to the involvement of influential figures, including some members of the political elite.
