Speaker of Parliament, Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has issued a stern warning to Members of Parliament (MPs) involved in illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, stating that they will face removal from office if caught.

In a statement made during a parliamentary session on January 30, Bagbin underscored the government’s commitment to combating the destructive effects of galamsey, particularly its toll on the country’s water resources and forest reserves.

“If you have evidence of any member involved in galamsey, bring it to my attention. I will initiate a process to ensure they lose their seat,” Bagbin said, calling on the public to provide credible information on any MPs engaging in illegal mining activities.

The Speaker emphasized that action would be taken if sufficient evidence is presented, adding, “The law allows us to take such action. I am not joking about this—if I receive credible information, the process will begin, and you will lose your position as a member of Parliament.”

This warning comes as the Ghanaian government intensifies efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, which has had a devastating impact on the nation’s environment.
