Following renewed disturbances between factions in the prolonged Bawku conflict, there are increasing calls for the state to declare a state of emergency in the Bawku area and its surrounding communities.
According to some security experts, a state of emergency will enable the security agencies to bring the situation under control and to prevent the loss of lives and properties in the Bawku area.
However, some political analysts are of the view that the declaration of a state of emergency will have political implications for the two main parties, the NDC and the NPP, with barely 40 days until the December general elections.
It’s obvious that the majority of voters in the Upper East Region and, for that matter, the Bawku area are sympathisers of the NDC, and a state of emergency will negatively affect the NDC politically, especially if it persists till the December elections as voters in the area may not be able to exercise their franchise.
The interior ministry and the national security ministry are yet to decide whether to declare a state of emergency or not.
The recent disturbance escalated over the weekend, leading to the loss of lives and properties.
