Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia and four other aspirants will appear before the vetting committee of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) today, as the party begins the process to select its presidential candidate for the 2026 primaries.
The vetting, taking place in Accra, is a key step for all candidates seeking to contest the party’s flagbearer position ahead of Ghana’s 2028 general elections.
Dr Bawumia, who served under former President Nana Akufo-Addo, is considered a leading contender. However, he faces strong competition from four other prominent figures within the NPP.
They include:
- Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, former NPP General Secretary;
- Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, businessman and former MP for Assin Central;
- Dr Bryan Acheampong, MP for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture;
- Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, MP for Bosomtwe and former Education Minister.
All five candidates will be assessed on their leadership credentials, political vision, and ability to unify the party.
Those who are cleared by the vetting committee will be eligible to appear on the ballot for the party’s presidential primaries, expected to be one of the most competitive in the NPP’s recent history.
