Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has officially launched an electronic gate (E-GATE) system at Kotoka International Airport, aimed at streamlining the arrival process for passengers. The system, which leverages advanced technologies like artificial intelligence and biometrics, is designed to reduce wait times and enhance border security.

Speaking at the commissioning on December 3, Dr Bawumia highlighted the system’s role in improving the efficiency of airport operations and bolstering security measures. “The E-GATE is part of Ghana’s digital transformation, ensuring a smooth travel experience while addressing potential security risks, such as illegal immigration,” he said.

The system is expected to be introduced at major airports across the country, marking a significant step in Ghana’s modernisation of border management. Dr Bawumia also emphasized the country’s readiness for future innovations, noting that the E-GATE system represents a shift towards more digital and automated solutions in line with the ongoing industrial revolutions.

In addition, Minister for the Interior Henry Quartey stressed that the new technology would strengthen the Ghana Immigration Service’s capabilities in tracking and monitoring individuals of security concern.

The introduction of the E-GATE is seen as a symbol of national pride and a testament to Ghana’s technological advancements.
