A coalition of 220 former Metropolitan, Municipal and District Chief Executives who served under the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration have thrown their support behind former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election.
The group—comprising ex-Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives (MMDCEs)—announced their endorsement during a press briefing in Accra on Monday,June 23rd, 2025 in a closed-door meeting with Dr. Bawumia. The gathering formed part of Dr.Bawumia’s broader stakeholder engagement strategy as he continues to solidify influence within the party following his 2024 presidential bid.
“After engaging with all potential aspirants and conducting a comprehensive evaluation of their leadership capacities, we are confident that Dr. Bawumia remains the NPP’s strongest prospect for victory in 2028,” the group said in a joint statement.
The endorsement marks one of the earliest high-level expressions of support for the next NPP presidential primary—more than three years ahead of the party’s nomination contest.
Strategic Support Network
The former MMDCEs, many of whom previously held key party positions at the constituency and regional levels, underscored their backing as more than a ceremonial gesture.
“This is not symbolic. We are making an operational commitment,” they said. “With a collective experience spanning over 16 years in party organization and public administration, we are positioned to ensure Dr. Bawumia’s message reaches every region and constituency.”
Their support taps into a powerful grassroots network that could shape early campaigning dynamics within the NPP, which will likely face an internal succession battle post-2024.
Record in Governance
The MMDCEs praised Bawumia’s record as Vice President, highlighting his leadership in Ghana’s digital transformation initiatives. Key programs such as the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and the digitalisation of port operations were cited as policy achievements that had “modernised and formalised large segments of the economy.”
“His data-driven and analytical approach to governance has positioned him as a results-oriented leader—qualities Ghana urgently needs in its next phase of development,” the group noted.
They also pointed to his cross-demographic appeal, describing him as both a “unifier” and “grassroots mobiliser,” qualities that, they argued, are vital for consolidating party unity and national cohesion.
“Dr. Bawumia has consistently demonstrated inclusive leadership, engaging diverse party factions and maintaining strong ties with grassroots supporters,” the statement read.
The NPP’s focus for now remains on the upcoming December 2024 general election, where Bawumia is set to face off against former President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). But Monday’s endorsement signals that planning for the party’s post-2024 direction is already well underway.
