Former Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia is sounding the alarm over what he calls a “dangerous pattern” of politically motivated arrests under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration, accusing the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) of weaponizing state power to weaken the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) ahead of the 2028 elections.

While campaigning in the NPP stronghold of the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, Bawumia claimed the NDC government is cracking down on prominent NPP figures, including Bono Regional Chairman Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye, and Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, better known as Chairman Wontumi.

“We’re all witnesses to what is happening after we left office,” Bawumia told supporters. “The NDC is harassing, abusing, and persecuting our people. They’ve gone after Chairman Wontumi, Chairman Abronye, our bloggers, TikTokers, and appointees.”

The former vice president painted the arrests as a broader attempt to intimidate dissenting voices and suppress the NPP’s digital and grassroots presence. “This is not just about individuals — it’s about silencing an entire movement,” he said.

Bawumia, who is positioning himself as the party’s front-runner for the 2028 presidential race, urged party faithful to remain united in the face of what he called state-sponsored repression. “This shows that we need to come together and stay united if we are to win in 2028,” he declared.

The Mahama administration has not yet responded to the allegations. However, the detentions have sparked fierce debate online and within Ghana’s political circles, fueling concerns over rising political tensions as the country inches closer to another high-stakes election.
