Vice President and Presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is set to sign a peace pact on Thursday, ahead of Ghana’s December 7 elections. The signing, organised by the National Peace Council, aims to reaffirm the commitment of political leaders to a peaceful electoral process.
Dennis Miracles Aboagye, spokesperson for the Bawumia campaign, confirmed the news during an interview on Joy FM’s Newsnite programme. He expressed the Vice President’s dedication to the cause, despite recent political tensions, stating: “We have just one Ghana.”
The peace pact, scheduled to take place in Accra, is part of ongoing efforts to ensure political stability and reduce electoral violence. It is the fourth such agreement to be signed since Ghana’s 2012 elections. By signing, political leaders pledge to respect the electoral process, accept the election results, and resolve disputes peacefully.
This initiative seeks to promote national unity and provide a positive message to supporters, emphasising the importance of peaceful conduct before, during, and after the elections.
In response to previous criticisms, former President and NDC Presidential candidate, John Mahama, raised concerns over the absence of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Dr. Bawumia at the National Peace Campaign launch earlier this month. Mahama, who cancelled a rally in Karaga to attend the event, questioned their commitment to national peace, especially amidst growing security concerns.
“You’re the ones responsible for the security and safety of the people. So, if peace talks are ongoing, it is necessary to leave everything you’re doing to join,” Mahama said.
Despite the criticism, Dr. Bawumia’s upcoming participation in the peace pact reflects his continued focus on maintaining peace during the election period.
