Benjamin Boakye, Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), has warned President-elect John Dramani Mahama that his incoming administration will face immediate challenges, particularly in the energy sector, with no time for a “honeymoon” period.
In an open letter to Mahama, Boakye highlighted the urgent need for action on Ghana’s energy crisis, pointing to over GH¢50 billion in annual waste within the sector. He stressed that these inefficiencies undermine public trust and economic stability, with the energy sector serving as a reflection of broader governance issues.
Boakye pointed to systemic failures, inefficiencies in state agencies, declining investor confidence in the oil and gas sector, and bloated administrative structures as issues that demand swift attention.
“This message is not meant to be lengthy, but to stress that you will not have the luxury of a ‘honeymoon’ in this situation,” Boakye said, urging the incoming government to focus on transparency.
He also called for the transition team to disclose the total outstanding debt in the energy sector before taking office to ensure a clear understanding of the financial challenges ahead.
