Members of Ghana’s 2009 U-20 World Cup-winning squad are set to receive 60,000 Ghana cedis each, following the maturity of a government investment made on their behalf after their historic victory.
In recognition of the team’s achievement, then-President John Evans Atta Mills established a 15-year investment plan, setting aside 10,000 cedis for each player. The investment, managed by SAS Finance Group, has now matured, with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) informing the players. Some players have already collected their cheques, while others can claim theirs by presenting their Ghana Cards.
The Black Satellites made history in 2009 by defeating Brazil in a dramatic penalty shootout after a goalless draw, despite being reduced to 10 men following a first-half red card for Daniel Addo. Under coach Sellas Tetteh, they became the first African team to win the U-20 World Cup.
Upon returning to Ghana, the squad was celebrated with new cars and cash by President Mills, who also chose to invest part of their reward for their futures. This decision has proven valuable, particularly as some players have faced financial difficulties due to early retirements caused by injuries. Only a few have been able to continue playing at the highest level.
Coach Tetteh, who was not included in the investment plan, is currently battling health challenges but has received support from former captain Andre Ayew and the GFA.
The 2009 squad remains one of Ghana’s most successful youth teams, also winning the African Youth Championship. Many players, including Ayew, Samuel Inkoom, Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu, Jonathan Mensah, and Dominic Adiyiah, went on to play pivotal roles in the Black Stars’ strong performances at the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup.
