The Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, is scheduled to testify before Parliament on March 5, 2025, following ongoing scrutiny over the construction of the central bank’s new headquarters.
The appearance comes after a request from Members of Parliament (MPs) from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in August 2023, seeking detailed information on the project’s financials, including its cost, scope, funding sources, and construction timelines.
In a statement on the floor of Parliament, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga confirmed that BoG officials would be required to provide justifications for the new building, particularly regarding cost variations and the overall need for the project.
“We’ve agreed that next Wednesday, we will invite the Governor of the Bank of Ghana to brief the house on the pricing of the new headquarters,” Ayariga said. “We want to understand the price fluctuations, quantities, and the rationale behind the construction of a new Bank of Ghana office.”
The Bank of Ghana’s new headquarters, named the Bank Square, was inaugurated by former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on November 20, 2024. The cutting-edge facility is designed to incorporate advanced technology and innovative architecture, aligning with the central bank’s goal to strengthen Ghana’s financial regulatory framework.
Mr. Akufo-Addo underscored that the new headquarters represents Ghana’s commitment to modernizing its financial infrastructure and supporting long-term economic development.
