Bruno Fernandes jumps to Alejandro Garnacho’s defense amid recent criticism

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has jumped to the defense of forward Alejandro Garnacho after the latter refused to “celebrate as he should” after scoring against Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday.

A widespread video of a United fan scrutinizing the winger was circulating on the internet after the Red Devils’ midweek EFL Cup triumph over Leicester City.

The 20-year-old has been under the microscope in recent weeks, with some United fans unhappy with how long Garnacho cleaves onto the ball and his lack of decision-making in the final third.

On Sunday, however, Garnacho made his mark after replacing Rashford as a second-half substitute in Manchester United’s 3-0 Premier League triumph at Old Trafford.

25 minutes after coming on for Rashford, Garnacho received a pass from Bruno Fernandes and nestled it into the top corner to extend United’s advantage to three.

Despite scoring a sensational goal, Garnacho, who usually wheels away to sit on the advertising boards at the Stretford end, was seen with minimal celebrations.

“Garnacho scored a banger but didn’t celebrate like he should because he thinks he has lost faith from some fans. I told him people will always moan but lots of people like you and enjoy what you do,” Fernandes told BBC Sport.

The winger’s goal was the last of the Ruud van Nistelrooy era as the interim manager steps aside for incoming coach, Ruben Amorim, to take over.

Garnacho, on the other hand, scored his sixth goal in all competitions for the Red Devils – the most of any Manchester United player this term.
