Voting has resumed at the St. Peter’s Polling Station in Ghana’s Ablekuma North constituency after a brief suspension caused by a violent disturbance during Friday’s parliamentary rerun.
Tensions flared when a group of unidentified men stormed the polling station, assaulting several individuals and disrupting the voting process. Among those attacked were Nana Akua Afriyie, the parliamentary candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and former Fisheries Minister Hawa Koomson.
Local journalist Jude Duncan, reporting for Citi News, confirmed that both women sustained physical assaults during the incident.
Security has since been stepped up at the polling centre, allowing voting to continue under tighter surveillance.
The rerun follows legal and procedural issues that have left the constituency without a sitting MP for over a year. Although the NPP has officially boycotted the vote, Ms Afriyie has defied the party’s directive and is standing as a candidate in the rerun.
