The Colleges of Education Teachers Association of Ghana (CETAG) has declared an indefinite strike starting today, January 2, 2025, following the government’s failure to meet key demands.

The move comes after months of unsuccessful attempts to address grievances, despite earlier notices issued on September 26 and December 23, 2024. CETAG’s decision stems from the government’s non-fulfilment of critical agreements, notably the failure to implement a compulsory arbitration award by the National Labour Commission (NLC) issued on May 2, 2023.

Key Issues Raised by CETAG:

Non-implementation of NLC Award: CETAG has accused the government of breaching the Labour Act by not adhering to the NLC’s arbitration award.

Delayed Salary Migration: The association has expressed dissatisfaction with a 20-month delay in migrating college of education staff to the pay structure of affiliate universities.

Unpaid Compensation: CETAG is demanding payment of one month’s basic salary as compensation for 2022, as per the NLC’s ruling.

Delayed Appointment Letters: CETAG has also criticised the delay in issuing new appointment letters for staff to complete the migration to the payroll system of the Controller and Accountant General’s Department.

Unpaid Allowances: Concerns have been raised over the non-payment of 2023 book and research allowance top-ups for staff at Akrokerri College of Education.

In addition to these grievances, CETAG has voiced its frustration with the NLC for its failure to enforce compliance with its own orders and directives.

The strike has disrupted academic activities in Ghana’s colleges of education, with CETAG calling for immediate government intervention to resolve the issues.
