Charles Forson of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has been declared the winner of the Tema Central parliamentary election after the Electoral Commission (EC) completed the collation of outstanding results, following a court order.
The EC made the announcement on Sunday, January 5, 2025, after the collation of two remaining polling stations, as directed by the High Court. Forson secured 18,870 votes, narrowly defeating Ebi Bright of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), who received 18,815 votes. An Independent candidate garnered 209 votes, while 114 votes were rejected, bringing the total votes cast to 38,038.
Tema Central is one of four constituencies still in contention between the NPP and NDC, with just two days remaining before the swearing-in of newly elected MPs. The NPP had contested the initial result, arguing that the collation process was incomplete and that the wrong candidate had been declared the winner.
On Saturday, January 4, the High Court in Accra ruled in favor of the NPP, ordering the EC to finalize the results with adequate security provided by the Ghana Police Service. The NPP also secured favorable rulings in the other contested constituencies of Ablekuma North, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central.
Following the court’s decision, the EC moved swiftly to complete the collation and prepare the final results ahead of the parliamentary swearing-in. However, the NDC has announced plans to appeal the High Court’s ruling on all four constituencies.
