Chief Justice Swears in Alban Bagbin as Speaker of Ghana’s 9th Parliament

The Chief Justice of Ghana, Gertrude Torkornoo, has sworn in Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament in a ceremony held in the early hours of January 7, 2025.

Mr. Bagbin, nominated by Majority Leader Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, assumes the role of Speaker in a Parliament where the National Democratic Congress (NDC) holds the majority and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is in the minority. The motion to elect him was seconded by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

Following a brief discussion, the Clerk to Parliament, Ebenezer Djietro, declared Mr. Bagbin as Speaker after confirming there were no other nominations. He was then sworn in by Chief Justice Torkornoo, who led him through the Speaker’s oath of office.

In his oath, Mr. Bagbin pledged to uphold Ghana’s constitution, faithfully discharge his duties as Speaker, and do right by all citizens of the country, without bias.

Alban Bagbin: A Profile

Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, born on September 24, 1957, is a seasoned Ghanaian politician who served as Speaker of the 8th Parliament of the Fourth Republic. Prior to becoming Speaker, he had a distinguished career, including roles as Minister for Health and Majority Leader in Parliament.

Bagbin represented the Nadowli West constituency for several terms and has been an influential member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He was the NDC’s presidential candidate contender in 2019, though he lost the nomination to former President John Dramani Mahama.

Educated at the University of Ghana, Bagbin also holds an Executive Master’s in Governance and Leadership from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA). His legal background and political experience have made him a key figure in Ghanaian politics.

As Speaker, Bagbin will continue his long-standing commitment to public service and national development, with a focus on upholding parliamentary integrity and the rule of law.
