Five people have died, and 30 others remain hospitalized following a cholera outbreak in Kasoa, Ghana. The affected individuals are being treated at the Kasoa Polyclinic and Mother and Child Hospital, officials report.

Anita Love Obo Amissah, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Awutu Senya East, confirmed that three people succumbed to the illness on Thursday, October 31, with two more fatalities recorded the following day. The MCE urged residents to remain vigilant, prioritize hygiene, and take preventive measures to curb further spread of the disease.

“We are deeply concerned about the situation,” said Amissah. “Both hospitals have mobilized their staff, including recalling those on leave, to handle the crisis. There have also been referrals from Awutu Senya West and Gomoa East, underscoring the need for a collaborative response.”

The outbreak has prompted municipal officials to call for stricter hygiene practices among market vendors and residents. Awutu Senya East Municipal Environmental Officer Godson Lodo emphasized the importance of cleanliness, particularly for food sellers. “We urge market women and food vendors to keep their surroundings clean and ensure that all food is served hot. Everyone must contribute to a cleaner environment to prevent further spread,” he advised.

The MCE commended health authorities for their rapid response and called on the public to heed official guidelines to protect themselves.
