Ghana has reported 4,155 suspected cases of cholera since October 2024, with 35 deaths as of December 23, 2024, according to the Ghana Health Service (GHS).

Dr. Patrick Kuma Aboagye, the Director-General of GHS, confirmed the figures in a statement issued on December 24. He noted that the Western Region has been the hardest hit, recording 17 fatalities.

An oral vaccination campaign was carried out between November 30 and December 19, 2024, in high-risk areas, including Awutu Senya East, Ahanta West, Effia-Kwesimintim, Sekondi-Takoradi, and Shama. A total of 662,906 individuals were vaccinated out of 792,482 eligible people.

Following the campaign, the number of cholera cases in these districts has declined, with Awutu Senya East reporting no new confirmed cases.

Dr. Aboagye urged the public to seek medical attention if experiencing diarrhea and vomiting and advised people to practice good hygiene during the festive season. This includes drinking clean water, eating hot food, washing fruits and vegetables thoroughly, and regularly washing hands with soap.
